COMING SOON

This summer, the world-famous White Shield micro-brewery will be moving across the courtyard into the ground floor of the building that houses our Heritage Galleries. This is great news for visitors as we'll be able to include the brewery as part of the tour.

Steve Wellington, master brewer, said “Jo White and I are absolutely delighted to see the Centre open. We’ll now have the opportunity to recreate some real ales for visitor in the new William Worthington Brewery – many of which won’t have been commercially available for decades.

Visitors will also be able to see brewing first hand whilst in the old Joiners Shop, where the new brewery will be located. It really is a very exciting project and one that that I am proud to be part of.”

Things to See and Do

Whether you're an ale-aficionado or simply looking to keep your children occupied, The National Brewery Centre offers all ages an entertaining and fun-packed day out.

Visitor Centre

You'll be transported back to a bygone era, when Burton's brewing industry revolutionised brewing techniques throughout the world. At one time, there were more than 33 breweries in the town and although this number has dwindled to a few, its legacy still lives on.

Our Brewing and Heritage Galleries explore the evolution of brewing techniques, from ancient times, right up to the modern day. There are hundreds of exhibits and rare artefacts on display, plus a dazzling holographic-style show using the age-old 'Peppers Ghost' illusion and a variety of multi-media presentations to bring the story to life.

Temporary Exhibition Gallery

Alongside our permanent exhibits, we also have a temporary exhibition gallery. Here you'll find themed selections of the art, photographs, ephemera, artefacts and other miscellaneous exhibits that are housed in our extensive archives. Currently we are showcasing a collection called 'Beer Mugs!', a selection of portraits from the brewery's past.

Character Performers

Our dedicated team of character performers will entertain you throughout your visit to the Centre. Serving you samples of real ales in our Edwardian Bar or shoveling malt, they'll bring Burton's glory days back to life.

Ale Tasting

During your visit, over 18s can try out some small samples (100ml) of some of our beers. Some have been produced on site by the White Shield micro-brewery, some from further afield. Children don't get left out as soft drinks are available.

Shire Horses and Stables

During weekends, school and Bank Holidays, you'll be able to get up close to our two magnificent Shire horses, Major and Trooper. We have an array of old drays (carts) that were used to deliver beer in days of old. We've also got a special wedding coach that will be available for weddings that will be held at the Centre. Come along and chat to the head horseman Andrew, who started his working life off delivering beer with Shire horses in Blackburn!

Transport

Transport played an important part of the evolution of the brewing industry. From horse-drawn drays, through to more modern-day vehicles, The National Brewery Centre houses a fine collection of vehicles, this includes delivery wagons, fire trucks, a double-decker bus and special promotional vehicles, such as a 1920s Daimler bottle car that was built to deliver promotional materials to pubs.

Steam

Steam enthusiasts will be delighted with both the engine and Directors' coach in our recreation of a station platform from the days when the Bass Brewery had its own railway network.

Our Robey steam engine operates at weekends and Bank Holidays by a dedicated team of enthusiasts.
